Photography 🢒 Hong Kong 1992-1995

Image

The infamous walled city of Kowloon in 1992.

When Britain took over the New Territories from China, a small fort was excluded from the treaty. Not too long after, the British managed to evict the residents of the fort despite that but successive Chinese governments never gave up their claim to the land. Since it was technically not part of Hong Kong, the HK police and government had no power over it. Over the years, outlaw housing grew on the area, populated by a wide range of people. Inside, various sorts of illegal businesses thrived.

In 1993, Britain and China finally concluded a deal to clear out the Walled City, and in 1994 they tore it down. So, this photo was taken near the end of its lifetime.

As you can see from the inset, the Walled City was very near Kai Tak airport.

There are many stories about the Walled City online, including this retrospective from the South China Morning Post: Remembering Hong Kong's 'City of Darkness'
